The best things to do in Peñíscola

Dominating the rock on which the old city stands, Peniscola Castle (also known as the Templar Castle) is one of the essential things to see in Peniscola. Built on an old Muslim fortress, the castle was the last refuge of Papa Luna. Today it remains open all year and hosts important museums and art galleries, which are some of the best places to visit in Peñíscola.

From the castle you can get to the old fortified town, where you'll find other interesting things to do in Peniscola. There are several highlights found in the walls of the city, such as the Portal Fosc and the Portal de San Pedro, two of the three entrances to the Old Town.

Other Peniscola attractions are the church of the Virgen del Socorro, the Sanctuary of the Mare de Deu Ermitana (the patron saint), and the gardens of Park Artillería.

The beaches are one of the great tourist attractions in
Peniscola
for sun worshipers, and what better than to take a dip in the beautiful sea. The promenade leads to North Beach, and with the castle in the background, it's one of the most popular beaches, along with South Beach and Widows Beach. If you want a bit more tranquility, in the southern end of town you'll find Russo Beach and Pebret Beach. Along with the beaches, one of the most popular Peniscola activities is visiting the nature park of Sierra de Irta. Besides its numerous hiking and biking trails, you can also visit numerous monuments, such as Xivert Castle, the chapel of Santa Llúcia, and Sant Benet or Ebrí tower. Other interesting excursions from the city are the Marsh of Peñíscola, the desert of Las Palmas, and Columbretes islands, which offer exciting stuff to do in Peniscola.
