Zunil

Zunil is a town 10 kilometers from Xela, a Quetzaltenando city in the Department of the same name. It is located where several roads cross, and thismakes it easy for local people to sell their crops here. In this region, with its cold weather and high altitudes, they cultivate carrot, bean, corn... To reach Zunil there is a chicken bus which leaves from Xela, taking twenty minutes. The village has remarkable architecture, but the market remains very traditional, costumes of all colors make it very interesting. The landscape of the hills Zunil surrounding are also very nice. The church is also nice, but the local saint, San Simon, does not reside there.

He lives with a family, and changes places every year, since the Catholic Church does not appreciates that people worship the saint. With a few coins and words, you can ask the children the way to the central square and they will take you to it. The market is partly covered, but the business are mainly outdoors. As you can see in the pictures, people from Quiche are small in stature, and I was the tallest in the market!

The church is beautiful, but does not include the local saint, Saint Simon. He lives with a family in the village and exchange house once a year, because the Catholic Church does not appreciate too the worship that people devote him. With a few quetzals and a smile, you can ask a child that takes you see Saint Simon. The market also has a covered area for meat and retail, but the wholesale market is located outside. As you can see from the picture, people are really small, and my 67 meter was the largest on the market!
