The Budapest Zoo is located in the City Park and has a surprisingly large space dedicated to animals from all over the world. For example, when we visited they were renovating a pool used to house killer whales. Also, given the cold winters in Budapest, many animals have to be housed in special greenhouse-type buildings during the winter months. Another highlight is the stunning Romantic architecture, especially that of the building used to house elephants and giraffes. The Empress Elisabeth of Austria was the founder of the zoo and donated the first pair of animals.
