Madrid's Best Rock Bar
Oh, the Wurlitzer. 6 out of the 10 craziest nights of my life have happened here. Let me explain: the Wurlitzer is a legendary rock'n'roll bar right off Gran Via (on c/ Tres Cruces, two streets from Montera heading towards Callao) that has 1.) great music, 2.)cheap-ish drinks, 3.) open until 5am, and 4.)it's free to get in.
The great thing about this bar is the uninhibited, free-wheeling vibe that sets in around 3am. People dancing on the stage, whisky and coke's splashing around on the dance floor, all kinds of unspeakable things happening in the saloon-door bathrooms. In short, it's everything a great a rock'n'roll bar should be.
They have concerts just about every night of the week which run the stylistic gauntlet, but mainly focuses on rock, punk, and pop. Lots of great up-and-coming international bands play here on their first swing through Spain.
The place doesn't get hopping until 1 or 1:30 in the morning, but everyone knows that, and after about 2 there is a lengthy line to get in (although it moves quite quickly). I'd suggest getting there around 1:30 to avoid the line but still get in right as the action starts.
