Central to Lille
Wazemmes is a neighborhood of Lille, a bit bohemian, an old neighborhood now filled with artists and musicians. The Wazemmes market square is the central place of the neighborhood, market days are Tuesday, Thursday and on Sunday there are more traders and more people. To Halle, the covered market, you can go any day, but I recommend Sunday. It is a dynamic neighborhood where parties are organized such as the International Festival of Soup or the festival of the bandoneon, original and very nice gestures. La Maison folie de Wazemme, the crazy house in French, was created in 2003 when Lille was European capital of culture, and is an artistic and creative home.
The factories in the neighborhood have stopped operating and the arts have led to a rebirth of this neighbourhood. Wazemmes, the name comes from "the lake house" due to its proximity to the river Deule. Today, the streets have been renovated and have beautiful facades and wrought iron balconies.
