Wat Phra Kaew

2 reviews of Wat Phra Kaew

Exquisite

It's one of the most important buildings in the country, not only for its history, but also for the school that houses a monastery. It was formerly called Wat Pa Yiah (Bamboo Forest Monastery), but it was changed when the famous Emerald Buddha was discovered hidden in the attic. There is another temple of the same name in Bangkok. The Jade Buddha contains a replica of the Emerald Buddha, whose implementation was entrusted to a Chinese artist, and placed in the temple in 1991, in honour of His Royal Highness Somdej Phrasrinkharintra.

This Buddha resides in the rear building of the temple. The main hall is made of wood with exquisite carvings and decoration, and its doors are decorated with reliefs. It contains one of the largest bronze Buddhas in Thailand. The Lanna tower dates from the 14th century. Behind it, there are some nice gardens, and a small pond full of turtles of various kinds. Both the gardens and the animals are cared for by the monks (Do the turtles eat rice?). It's at Thanon Trairat and any driver or local knows which one it is and can give you directions.

A beautiful temple to be discovered

At the center of the complex is the main temple, closed at the time of our visit, while behind it a white stupa stands as a symbol of faith. The visit can last for about an hour and passaggiare amidst the scent of many ornamental plants treated by the monks is an enjoyable and calming.
