Greyhound Buses are the most popular...
Greyhound Buses are the most popular means of transportation for short trips within the United States and Canada for those without private transportation. The buses are much cheaper than the trains which are much less popular in the U.S. than in Europe. We traveled from Washington's Union Station to New York City. It is advisable to arrive well in advance because even after having bought a ticket online, there was quite a queue to collect the ticket. Also, as there are so many buses and people getting on and off buses, the schedules are not always strictly followed. We arrived about 7 o'clock in the morning with the intention of getting an 8:00am bus but in the end we left a little before 9:00am.
That wasn't bad but the next day we had to the trip from New York to Montreal and it was terrible. The box office employees forced us to buy a round-trip ticket even though we only needed a one-way. They argued that we needed to demonstrate that we were returning to the U.S. so that the Canadian border control would allow us to enter. We had a plane ticket leaving Canada to Spain which was much better proof that we were going to leave the continent in a few days but they told us the printed itinerary of our electronic ticket was not a real plane ticket and they refused to sell us the one-way. We paid $139 for a 9 hour trip with two night stops in which we had change buses. I would have paid any price to go by plane or to have rented a car and made the trip in about 5 hours. When we finally arrived in Montréal, friends told us that there had been a murder on a Greyhound bus in the Canadian province of Manitoba just a few weeks before.
