Built by the Moors
The historic district or “old town” of Trujillo is surrounded by walls built by the Moors in the 10th century, although they were repaired and expanded in the 11th, 13th, 15th, and 16th centuries.
The walls are built of plaster, stone, limestone, and sand and there are several crenellated towers topped with a pyramid shape as well as several doors which give access to the walled city. Currently, there are 17 towers and 4 doors (those of Santiago, San Andrés, Triunfo, and La Coria) which you can visit as you explore the winding streets of the historic district.
