1 review of Walking Tour of Edinburgh

Free walking tour

Excellent

I had heard of the free tours that are sometimes organized in different big cities but I wasn't convinced they were any good. But when I found leaflets from a tour company in our hotel in Edinburgh we decided to try it, especially since we only had two days to explore the city and were running out of money. The walking tour starts every day at 11 am at the Tron Kirk on Royal Mile. It lasts for about 4 hours and you learn a lot about the curious history of the city and about Scotland. Our experience was fantastic, as Edinburgh is a beautiful and interesting city but also because the guide was great.

He recounted the history of Scotland in an interesting and entertaining way, sometimes dark and sometimes humorous. Our route took us around the Old Town and some of its most famous streets. We stopped at several places that go unnoticed by most of the tourists like the stone heart and the gallows. We also visited Deacon Brodie's Tavern, the Elephant House, and the cemetery. We finished in the beautiful Princes Gardens with the beautiful Castle of Edinburgh in the background as we learned about the true story of William Wallace and the story of the Stone of Destiny which is a symbol for the Scots. The tour is free but they explained that the company feels that each traveler should assess the service received and tip based on what they feel is appropriate and what they can afford. After nearly four hours with a great guide, the assessment was more than positive. For me, it is a must for any traveler to Edinburgh. As many know, the city is famous for its mysteries and its relation to parapsychology. During the tour we learned a few things about some macabre events but in the evenings there is a special tour more about this called "Edinburgh in the Evening" which costs £9 and includes a pint of beer. Our tour guide told us he was giving that evening's tour so we signed up without hesitation. It was fantastic! It was a whole different darker history. Finally, for those who complete the day tour, you'll be hungry afterward (with good reason, because it ends at about 3 in the afternoon), the company has an agreement with a pub near Princes Street which offers a menu at a great price for those who have done the tour. It's a perfect opportunity to taste the famous Scottish dish, haggis.
