Vitoria-Gasteiz

Nunca me había sucedido algo parecido con otra ciudad. No tenía planificado para nada un viaje a Vitoria, pero una compañera de trabajo me pidió que la acompañara al festival Jazzaldia de Donosti, y como soy de fácil convencer, pues acepté. Ella organizó prácticamente todo(yo soy más dada a lo espontáneo). Durante cinco días organizó una ruta que nos hizo recorrer las tres grandes ciudades vascas: Vitoria, Donosti y Bilbao. La primera a la que llegamos fue Vitoria. Ya desde las afueras comienzas a darte cuenta de lo especial de esta ciudad, de su naturaleza, de su relajada existencia. Se nota calidad de vida en cualquier rincón. Nuestro destino era el Hotel NH Canciller Ayala, casi nada, en pleno centro, enfrente del Parque de la Florida. Fue dejar las maletas, ducha rápida y salir a descubrir la gastronomía ya que a las 16:00 teniamos hora concertada para visitar la Catedral y después la muralla (una agenda apretada como veís). Pero, que barbaridad!!!, nadie nos había preparado para esta ciudad. Las dos andábamos como embobadas, enamoradas de esta villa y eso, que todavía no habíamos llegado a su centro histórico. Que más puedo añadir, ya iré desengranado el resto en rincones específicos, ya que Vitoria y su casco antiguo, Gasteiz, dan para mucho...;-) Que puedo decir, pues que Vitoria nos enamoró, que tuvimos dos días para visitarla y que en mi caso, fue tan fuerte el impacto, que al volver a casa no hablaba de otra cosa y mi compañero no tuvo más remedio que acompañarme, en menos de un mes, a otro viajecito a la ciudad, esta vez, aprovechando una ruta que hicimos por La Rioja y que finalizó en las Fiestas Patronales de la ciudad. Pero esa es otra historia y merece otro rincón. Vitoria-Gasteiz, una pasada!!!!. Ya la tengo muy arriba de mi top-ten y de momento es difícil que le quiten el lugar.

Our destination was the Hotel NH Chancellor Ayala, almost nothing in the center, opposite the Parque de la Florida. Was leaving the room, quick shower and off to explore the cuisine and at 16:00 we had arranged time to visit the Cathedral and then the wall (a tight schedule as you see). But that outrage!, No one was prepared for this city. The two were walking as embobadas, in love with this town and that, we still had not reached its historic center. What else I can add, and the rest will go disengaged specific corners as Vitoria and its old town, Gasteiz, go far ... ;-) I can say, then, that Vitoria we love, we had two days to visit and in my case, the impact was so strong that upon returning home talked of nothing else and my partner had no choice but to accompany me, in less than a month, another little trip to the city, this time, taking a route we did for La Rioja and ended in the festivity of the city. But that's another story and deserves another corner. Vitoria-Gasteiz, one pass!!. I have already the very top of my top ten and it is currently difficult to take away from the place.

Entre el 21 de octubre y el 11 de diciembre, Vitoria se convierte en capital del fotoperiodismo con la celebración del Festival Periscopio. Este certamen acerca el trabajo de este género periodístico a través de las exposiciones programadas en diversos puntos de la ciudad: centro cultural Montehermoso, palacio de Villa Suso, casa del Cordón, plaza de España, museo de Bellas Artes de Álava, ... El festival también cuenta con el concurso 'Periscopio Amateur' para fotógrafos aficionados, cuyas obras están repartidas por establecimientos de Vitoria. Between October 21 and December 11, Vitoria becomes capital of photojournalism with the Festival Periscope. Bello lugar en el mundo. La almendra, como le llaman al casco antiguo (por su forma) esta muy bien conservada. El centro de encuentro es la Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. Por las noches podes encontrar bares donde tomarte un rico vinito, comer un montadito y escuchar buena música. Si eres realmente un viajero, no puedes perderte este rincón en el mundo

Vitoria es una ciudad que te transporta a otro siglo sí visitas el casco viejo , los sentidos como la vista o el gusto y el olfato se desarrollan al ver la limpieza de sus calles, el olor de un buen vino o saborear una magnífica tapa en cualquiera de sus bares o restaurantes, os lo recomiendo encarecidamente. Yo me hospede en el nh canciller, sólo puedo recomendarlo pues por ubicación y precio es perfecto.

Por la mañana, después de desayunar como reyes podéis visitar Vitoria. Allí podéis coger el tren turístico, que sale de la Plaza de la Virgen Blanca, -auténtico centro neurálgico de la ciudad-, y que a los niños les gustará. Pero lo más interesante es La Catedral vieja, abierta por obras. Creo que vale 8,50 € (los niños entre 6 y 12 años 1€), pero merece la pena recorrerla por dentro, por fuera, por lo alto y lo bajo. Es una ruta muy completa y bien diseñada. La visita dura una hora más o menos, pero tiene turnos. Ojo, conviene llamar para saber horarios Las "Cuatro Torres" de las iglesias de San Pedro, San Miguel, San Vicente y la Catedral de Santa María configuran una silueta emblemática de la ciudad y sus interiores ofrecen elementos arquitectónicos relevantes. Muy bonita la Iglesia de San Miguel, y haceros fotos con la escultura en bronce del Celedón, personaje pintoresco que baja el 5 de agosto con su paraguas, su boina y su puro, inaugurando las fiestas de la ciudad. También el ensanche romántico ofrece espacios arquitectónicos reseñables como la Plaza de España y los Arquillos o la interesante Plaza de los Fueros. El Paseo de la Senda y los contiguos hasta Armentia nos ofrecen también la posibilidad de descubrir diferentes muestras de arquitectura regionalista. Y después a comer, que ya es hora. En Vitoria recomiendo, sobre todo: Saburdi en C/ Dato 32 (su barra de pintxos es espectacular, tienen también su versión de perrito caliente, que para los niños está muy bien, y espectacular el minimagnum de queso idiazábal); Sagartoki en C/ Prado 18 (tortilla de patatas campeona del mundo; huevo frito, una especie de ravioli de puré de patata deshidratado que envuelve un huevo campero y bacon, osea una explosión en la boca; mini cucurucho de foie); La Malquerida en C/ Correría 10, junto a la Plaza de la Virgen Blanca; El Portalón C/Correría 147-151, junto a la Catedral, una antigua posada del s.XV restaurada y que tiene una carta variada de raciones, muy adecuada también para niños y de buen precio.

Nos encontramos en la capital vasca de Vitoria-Gasteiz, donde su clima puede resultar muy gélido durante muchos meses del año, pero quien su encanto no pierde. Vitoria-Gasteiz es la capital de la provincia de Alava, su población es de unos 250.000 habitantes, eso la convierte en una ciudad pero sin ser demasiado caótica. Cuenta con un servicio de transporte muy completo y muy cómodo para moverse por la ciudad, de echo los primeros días de nuestra aventura se centraron prácticamente en conocer la capitar y nos movimos única y exclusivamente en transporte publico. El precio de cada carrera suele ser de 1,40€ por adulto y niños hasta 5 años no pagan. El resto de días decidimos alquilar un coche y recorrer los alrededores, pasando por Bilbao, La Guardia, Burgos y más.

Gasteiz se fundó como un asentamiento en uno de los altos montañosos que rodean la ciudad, entre el siglo VI y VIII por parte de algunas tribus francas y adoptando siglos después el nombre de Vitoria. En la actualidad cuenta con un anillo verde de 30 km. que la rodea y que es motivo de orgullo de sus habitantes. La primera mañana la dedicamos a dar una vuelta por la plaza de la Virgen Blanca y la ahora llamada plaza Nueva ( aunque aún sigue rezando en la placa Plaza de España ) Para ir calentando motores, no adentramos en La Almendra o casco viejo, donde sus seis calles históricas conforman unos semicírculos concéntricos ( calle cuchillería, calle zapatería, calle panadería, calle herrería … ) y donde probamos los primeros pintxos con sus correspondientes zuritos de cerveza o potes de vino, según el gusto de cada uno. En el Bar La Malquerida, ponen un tataki de atún que no tiene nada que envidiar al de el mejor restaurante japonés. La catedral vieja lleva diez años en obras. Y… los que le quedan. Aunque para ser más exactos y según la historia de la ciudad que nos contó la guía turística, los intentos de reforma y consolidación para corregir los problemas estructurales se han llevado a cabo, casi todos de forma equivocada, durante varios momentos históricos desde su fundación en el siglo X. Al parecer Ken Follet se inspiró en el reforzamiento de su cimentación para algunos de los pasajes de su libro “ Un mundo sin fin “ y ciertamente se trata de un lugar idóneo para inspirarse en los trabajos de construcción de la edad media. Tras la visita y de vuelta al hotel, paseamos por los restos de la muralla y los palacios de Montehermoso y Suso de la parte alta de la ciudad, antes de asearnos de nuevo para buscar un buen asador. Y fué así como conseguimos una mesa en el asador Matxete, donde degusté un buen pescado. Uno de los momento gastronómicos cumbre lo disfrutamos en la cena del miércoles en el asador Sagartoki. Este local lo regentan el cocinero Neñe y un barman, que tras el grave incendio sufrido hace unos años, han sabido darle un gran impulso apostando por los excelentes pintxos ( entre los que destacan “ El huevo Sagartoki “ y la mejor tortilla de Espaňa de 2010 ), un chuletón de vaca de enorme tamaño, una buena bodega y buenos combinados. En nuestro último día volvíamos a cambiar de registro y nos dirigimos hacia uno de los enormes parques que rodean Vitoria, el parque Salburua, donde hicimos una agradable ruta a pie entre sus impresionantes humedales y disfrutando desde uno de sus observatorios de su importante reserva de aves y ciervos. Dicen que si te gusta algo… repites. Pues no hay dos sin tres y por lo tanto nuestro última comida también la hicimos a base de tapeo. Y afortunadamente encontramos un bar del que yo había oído hablar : Toloño, donde tuvimos la oportunidad de degustar su famoso “ Irlandés “, aún de moda después de que en 2008 ganara el premio al mejor pintxo de Euskadi. Y para terminar dónde empezamos nos dirigimos a La Malquerida a tomar la espuela y un delicioso café en Dublín, en la plaza de la Virgen Blanca, donde nuestra última parada en su terraza nos permitió disfrutar de un magnífico rato de sol. Haremos mención también al buen nivel del hotel Silken Ciudad de Vitoria, con un correcto desayuno y una piano bar con buen ambiente para nuestra diaria copa nocturna y dónde un grupo de lugareños nos acompañó una noche con sus cantos corales.

En la cumbre de la Plaza se encuentra la Parroquia de San Pedro con una imagen de la Virgen entre arcos, allí podemos ver a Celedón.
