Worth a visit
This square has not always been as you see it today. Once the harbour stood here, but in 1797 General Miollis decided to transform it into a square used for military training. There's also a monument to remind passersby that Mantova was the home of Virgil. The task was given to the architect Paolo Pozzo, who filled troughs, planted trees, plants and shrubs. The monument was opened in 1801, and was demolished in 1919 to be replaced by the current marble work. It was finally opened in 1927. It's worth going for a walk around the park to the monument, and admiring the fountains.
