Villanueva de Algaidas is a relatively young village, founded in 1566 by Pedro Téllez Girón, first Duke of Osuna. Although it must be borne in mind that there are traces of settlement in the area much earlier. There are remains of Roman pottery found at the site of the Villeta, possibly signifying the presence of a Roman settlement. The village is very quiet. The area is full of of orchards and olive groves, people generally work on their land. There are several stately homes, which give the town a decadent note.
