Former Royal Residence
The Vila Viçosa Castle was built in 1270, under the patronage of King Afonso III. Over the centuries, it has undergone many separate renovations. It was a royal residence until 1501, when the third Duke of Bragança was executed for treason and his son Jaime Braganca declined to reside there so he built the royal palace.
From the castle grounds, you can visit the archaeological and hunting museums. Additionally, they have a shrine of the patron saint of Portugal. Unfortunately when we got to the castle, it was pouring rain and it was dark so we were only able to take a few pictures. Still,
