Excellent cavas
Although it might sound strange, Almendralejo (Extremadura) has been producing excellent cavas for the past 25 years under the supervision of the Cava Regulatory Council. The Vía de la Plata Winery also creates white and red wines and has an area for wine tastings as well as in-house and online stores. The cava is produced mainly with chardonnay, tempranillo, and merlot grapes and comes in semi-sweet, brut, and brut nature varieties.
So, it turns out that not all cava is produced in Catalonia.
In fact, Extremadura’s cava is of exceptional quality and enjoys a magnificent reputation.
So, it’s worthwhile to discover the Vía de la Plata Wineries, a family-run business creating artisanal wines using traditional methods. It’s located in Almendralejo and you can visit the facilities and learn about the entire cava-making process (somewhat similar to that for wine, logically, but with some substantial differences). If you visit around Christmas time like we did, you can see the winery during its peak period.
