1 review of Velázquez Statue in El Prado Museum

The most famous face of the Paseo del Prado

This is one of the most famous faces of Madrid (of the Spanish painter Velázquez), and it is located in an essential Madrid site, the Prado Museum: one of the most important museums in the world whos collection contains works from artists like Velázquez, El Greco, Goya, Tiziano, El Bosco, Murillo, Ribera, Rubens, Zurbarán, Rafael, Veronese, Tintoretto or Van Dyck.

The statue was created by Aniceto Marinas. If you take a closer look, you'll see a dedication in its pedestal that says: 'Spanish artists, a Círculo de Bellas Artes initiative, 1899". It was unveiled back on June 14th, 1899 by King Alfonso XIII and the regent queen at the time.

Diego de Velázquez was appointed as the official painter of King Felipe IV. Several years later he managed to be the official painter, the most important position between the Court's painters. He dedicated the rest of his life to paint royal family and king's portraits.

The statue has such an emblematic face. Hundreds of photographs are taken there every day, with the Museo del Prado in the background. One of the best cultural offerings in the capital.
