Plaza de Pedro Zerolo

Beyond the cliché

Chueca is a neighborhood that has gone beyond the cliché of the "gay neighborhood" thanks to its own merits, although, I must admit, that part for those merits were investments in bars, shops and hotels for people with a lot of money. Sometimes the usual image turns into something even more dangerous: "a posh gay neighborhood".

The best way to lose this image is to sit down on the square and check out how things are in a neighborhood where flat rents are even higher than in other parts of Madrid: pickpockets, three hundred thousands unknown people asking for a cigarette, some euro coins or paper, club security guys in the middle of the day with the same unfriendly face and no one drinking in the streets.

Where are the gays, lesbians and transsexuals meeting there on Gay Pride day? Yes, in cheaper neighborhoods. And the march area still has the same atmosphere, but not the people who are now totally posh and who have drinks in the Óscar, the formal restaurant-hotel of the corner with ten thousands colors.

Excellent

As important as the Plaza de Chueca is the Plaza Vazquez de Mella in the neighborhood of Chueca. From this square you can sense a bit the Gran Via which is approximately 50 meters. People often come to her every day to play with kids because it is a large square and quiet where there is little traffic. Each year we leave prints crowded especially in Pride Festivals and concerts are held in this square and also usually public White Night. In the square there highlight the monument in honor of Vazquez de Mella has a small source that pigeons often turn to drink water.
