A popular attraction
This cameo glass vase (located in Room 70 of the British Museum, dedicated to the classic art of Rome and Italy), is one of the most popular of the entire collection of this museum. A lot of people gather in the window to see it, especially the Eastern groups. It was in Italy for approximately 5-25 years where it was found in a tomb near Rome. Its importance lies in its originality because it was the first work of glass art throughout the West. The technique used at the time was very painstaking and very complicated. It owes its name to the Dukes of Portland, who were the owners from 1785 to 1945. It looks black, but it looks blue at the same time. It is decorated with mythological figures in opaque white. It seems like this vase inspired many who admired it throughout history.
