Il castello di Van (Van Kalesi) sorge su una rupe che dista quasi cinque chilometri dalla città verso ovest. Non è direttamente sulla riva del lago (anticamente lo era), ma più all'interno. Per arrivare al castello bisogna attraversare cinque chilometri di cadente periferia. Si può fare a piedi o si può prendere un dolmus - un taxi collettivo - per una modica cifra. Quest'ultima opzione è preferibile.
Non è un vero e proprio castello. Si tratta in realtà delle rovine (in mattoni e basalto) di una fortezza dell'antico regno di Urartu, la cui costruzione iniziò nel nono secolo avanti Cristo e che sovrasta le rovine dell'antica capitale Tushpa. Della fortezza resta poco. E' invece perfettamente conservata un'iscrizione fatta incidere direttamente sulla roccia della rupe dal re persiano Serse il grande nel quinto secolo avanti Cristo. Vi ci vorrà un po' di tempo per trovarla, dal momento che nell'area del castello, per quanto non grande, ci sono numerosi sentieri che si intrecciano. Può capitare che alcuni bambini del posto si offrano insistentemente di farvi da guida.
La vista sulle montagne e il lago dalla parte più alta dello sperone di roccia è affascinante ed è probabilmente l'immagine che resta più impressa di una visita a Van. Consigliato il tramonto, che è sul lago (a ovest del castello).
E' una delle attrattive principali della zona assieme alla [poi=83961]chiesa di Akdamar [/poi].
Van Castle (Van Kalesi) stands on a cliff which is about five kilometers from the city to the west. It is directly on the shore of the lake (in the past it was), but further inland. To get to the castle you have to cross five miles dilapidated suburbs. It can be done on foot or you can take a dolmus - a shared taxi - for a modest sum. The latter option is preferable. It's not a real castle. This is actually the ruins (brick and basalt) of a fortress of the ancient kingdom of Urartu, whose construction began in the ninth century BC and which overlooks the ruins of the ancient capital Tushpa.
