An eternal flame
At the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, you’ll find the tomb of the unknown soldier with an eternal flame and a eternally vigilant guard. It was built after WWI at the behest of General Giulio Douhet.
The body of the Unknown Soldier was chosen by Mary Bergamas in the Austro-Hungarian town of Gradisca D'Isonzo. The body was that of a young man who had deserted the Austro-Hungarian army, joined the Regio Esercito (Italian Army), and lost his life in action during World Word I.
