If traveling in the area, stop in Ullapool
Ullapool port has 1500 inhabitants, it's on the west coast of the Highlands at the mouth of Loch Broom and is in one of the least populated areas of Scotland. It was founded in the XVIII century as a fishing port to provide work for expelled peasants. In 1773 the first emigrant ship bound for Nova Scotia set sail from there. Today it is a sports centre (yachting, climbing, etc.) and has the ferry to Stornoway, on the Isle of Lewis, which generates considerable tourist flow. Tourists can buy fishing gear, hand-woven bags and books (in the tiny but excellent library attached to Ceilidh Place restaurant).
It's worth visiting the Museum and Tourist Centre which occupies one of the 32 Parliamentary Churches erected in the Highlands by the Church of Scotland. It closed in 1935, was restored and reopened as a museum in 1988, it provides a great introduction to local history. Walk around the harbor, contemplate the boats anchored there and sip a beer at one of the nearby terraces - it makes it worthwhile. If traveling in the area, stop in Ullapool.
