Iron Age settlement
Tynemouth is a coastal village, between Sunderland and Newcastle founded in the Iron Age. It is a strategic point between two beaches and over a cliff. Today it is a fairly select area which is visited by locals to walk or spend the day.
It is quite picturesque, particularly the area of King Edward's Bay, a beach between cliffs, dominated by the remains of the castle, the abbey and Second World War fortifications.
In Victorian times it was a hot spot and some of the most famous pubs from that time are still there, intact and fully operational.
Historically it was used by King Edward II in his campaigns against Scotland, during the War of Independence in the 14th century. The king stayed at the Priory beside the castle.
