Haute cuisine in miniature

Txirimiri is a small pinxtos (Basque tapas) tavern in the heart of Madrid’s La Latina neighbourhood. Well, really, it’s two taverns; one in the Salamanca District, and this one, which has a much better atmosphere and an even better Spanish omelette. Txirimiri’s secret weapon is its Spanish potato omelette with caramelized onion, which is so good that it’s difficult to describe with words. Other delicious things include the hamburgers, croquetas, and basically anything else on the menu. The owner, be warned, is a bit gruff and under normal conditions, his attitude would have garnered a bad review.

But look…tasting that Spanish omelette is worth putting up with that jerk for a few minutes. The place doesn’t accept reservations so get there early if you can!

Delicious

Excellent

In their branch in the Salamanca District, in the Princesa area, or in La Latina, you can enjoy a good pincho of Spanish potato omelette, cooked just right, with caramelized onion.
If I had to make a complaint, it would be that the omelettes aren’t always fresh out of the kitchen, although Txirimiri did receive an award in 2006 for the best updated traditional recipe.
They say that Txema Larrañaga learned to make his Spanish omelettes from his mother, then worked in Juana La Loca (there he learned the perfect texture) and the rest is history.
I also recommend trying their other specialty: a pincho of pork loin with foie gras.

Fantastic. Each pincho (1/8 of a Spanish omelette) is 2.30 euros.

The best tapas in La Latina

Excellent

The pincho of pork loin, the lasagna, and the risotto are unbeatable. The kitchen is open all afternoon, so it’s a perfect place to pop in and get a good afternoon snack. It’s also an ideal place to have your first drink of the night.
