Hiking & Camping at Twin Lakes

Twin Lakes are located about 10km away from the Red Rock Canyon Parking Lot in Waterton Lakes National Park. This hike can be accomplished as a full day hike, although it is a long one at 22.6 km altogether. There are 4 backcountry tent camping sites at Twin Lakes that can be reserved in advance if you'd rather camp. The hike is challenging, although not ridiculously difficult. Make sure to carry bear spray as the area is frequented by black bears and grizzlies.

Great boots and hiking poles are recommended, as there are several avalanche zones along the trail…we found ourselves hiking through knee-deep snow in the middle of July.

The campsites are closer to upper twin lake, which is nice, but if you'd like a real treat, hike down to lower twin lake for a swim. The water is much cleaner and even a little warmer, although it is still freezing at best! Be sure to do your research if you do plan on making this a backcountry camping trip…there is a lot to know before you go.
