1 review of Nagarkot - Changu Narayan Trek

Impressive

The impressive Kathmandu Valley has thousands of hiking opportunities for all tastes and physical states. You can trek for several days or do short stretches between towns with fantastic landscapes. An option is the short route from Nagarkot to Changu Narayan. I left Bhaktapur, where I was staying, in a very cheap taxi and in 20 minutes was in Nagarkot. This town is at high altitude and has spectacular mountain views that close the Kathmandu Valley. Nagarkot has always been the summer residence of the Kathamandu wealthy, so there's more to do than admire stunning 5-star hotels and snowy mountains that cut the horizon.

To reach Tharkot, where the road to Changu Narayan is, you can walk down from Nagarkot (along the tedious road to Bhaktapur) or take a bus, which is an adventure. Travel with pigs, loose hens and chicks and a Neanderthal (ve charges you the ticket, carrying tight wad of money in his mouth). The descent only lasts 10-15 minutes but is unforgettable. There isn't a sign in Tharkot, but you see a track on your right which slowly climbs. After a while you'll be alone in the world, surrounded by mountains on one side and on the other by an amazing rural landscape. For about 1 ½ hours you won't see anyone, then humble hamlets start appearing with colors, heaps of grass to dry in the sun, women in the fields of crops. Beyond is the great temple of Changu Narayan, from which you can return walking down another amazing path to Bhaktapur.
