1 review of Transport in Mljet

One of the jewels of the Adriatic

The island of Mljet is one of the jewels of the Adriatic and that is why the western half has been declared a national park. No doubt this is the most striking part of the island and has thousands of places wonderful to see, but getting there is not so simple. Although it is a small island 37 miles long by 3 miles wide it can be difficult to get from where you left the ferry to the national park entrance. The ferries usually stop in Sobra, at the eastern end and to enter the park you must reach or Pomena or Polace. There are several ways to make the journey, one of them is on a local bus which lasts half an hour.

The problem is that it doesn't run very often and sometimes you have to wait a long time. You can also make the journey by renting a car. This is quite advisable if you go in groups of four because it reduces the cost and you don't have to wait. Besides the rented vehicles are impressive, as you can see in the photos they vary from fully tuned small cars and simulated animals (pictured is a kind of dog) to six hundred reminding us of another time. Cars can be rented in Sobra and returned in the same place so there is no problem. We got the bus as it arrived when we did, but we had to walk back because we had just missed the last bus. It's a pretty long way especially if its early afternoon, so I recommend you pay attention to transportation. By the way, I forgot to say that all these problems will cease to exist if you catch the boat that goes directly from Korcula to Pomena. Another wonders of the island is a XII century Benedictine monastery that houses the church of Santa Maria. To see this wonder you must use a wooden boat from Pomena that runs four times a day. In this case the transport enjoyable as the boat has great charm and you can enjoy a unique view of the island.
