La Torre del Caracol es cuanto queda de lo que fue el inmenso y lujoso castillo, Palacio de la Mota, residencia de Juan Alonso de Pimentel, Conde de Benavente.
El castillo fue construido en el siglo XII, aunque la torre es de principios del siglo XVI para armería del castillo; éste fue destruido durante la guerra de la Independencia, y la torre, que se mantuvo en pie, fue rehabilitada en 1953 adosándole una nueva construcción que alberga en la actualidad el Parador de Turismo de Benavente.
La torre presenta una mezcla de estilos gótico y renacentista. En la fachada se pueden apreciar los escudos de la familia Pimentel y otros motivos decorativos. De lo poco que se puede ver por fuera de la torre, lo que me resultó más curioso son los remates curvos de las esquinas, y los balcones. Es una pena que no pueda visitarse su interior, ya que según dicen hay un artesonado mudéjar precioso en sus salas interiores.
Se ha convertido en el emblema de la ciudad, y está declarada monumento nacional del patrimonio español. Creo que como tal, debería ser un monumento visitable por el público.
Se encuentra en la zona alta de Benavente, dominando toda la vega. Justo frente a ella se encuentran los jardines y el paseo de la Mota, y un excelente Mirador desde el que se ve el valle del Órbigo, el parque de la Pradera y las piscinas municipales.
Caracol Tower is what remains of what was the immense and luxurious castle, Palacio de la Mota, residence of Juan Alonso de Pimentel, Count of Benavente. The castle was built in the twelfth century, although the tower is from the early sixteenth century castle armory; it was destroyed during the War of Independence, and the tower, which remained standing was restored in 1953 by attaching a new building that now houses the Parador de Turismo de Benavente. The tower presents a mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles. On the facade you can see the shields of the Pimentel family and other decorative motifs. From what little can be seen on the outside of the tower, I found most curious are the curved tops of the corners, and balconies. It"s a shame that can not be visited inside because they say there is a beautiful coffered ceiling in its interior rooms. It has become the emblem of the city, and is declared a national monument of Spanish heritage. I think as such, should be a visitable monument by the public. It is located in the upper area of Benavente, dominating the whole plain. Just in front of it are the gardens and Paseo de la Mota, and an excellent vantage point from which the valley of Orbigo, Meadow Park and the municipal swimming pools is.
