A defensive tower
At the eastern end of the Pyrenees, overlooking Collioure and the Mediterranean Sea, the Madeloc tower was built as part of the fortifications in 1285, under Jacques II de Mallorca. It was designed to monitor the sea and protect from attacks, mainly from his brother, Peter III. The tower could communicate with others by fires at night, and smoke signals during the day. You can climb to the top, 652m above sea level, and enjoy a panoramic view of the area.
