Peace and tranquility
Totalan is about 22 km from Málaga and 15 km from Rincón de la Victoria, in a valley with the hills of Salazar, Vareno and Herrerias. Although limited in Málaga and Rincón de la Victoria, in Totalan you can enjoy peace and tranquility typical of the mountain villages. The origin of the people is from the sixteenth century, when the peasant population sought a settlement far from the coast, to avoid pirate attacks. The town is on a hill about 300 feet high, between the streambeds of Totalán and Olias. The town's economy is based on agriculture, mainly almond and olive trees. Long ago the main asset was vines, but a plague destroyed all crops which caused the population to abandon the town.
The most important monument of Totalán is the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario from the sixteenth century. During the last week of May they celebrate a festival and county fair in honor of their patron. The cuisine includes fried pumpkin, tomato soup and gazpacho, even though the "signature dish" is Chanfaina, which even has a popular day where all the people involved offer visitors a taste.
