Nel complesso sacro dedicato a Sant'Agnese fuori le mura, a Roma, tra gli elementi da vedere, non si può perdere la torre medievale, tozza e larga, che si ritrova all'entrata della chiesa su via Nomentana, davanti a un ampio cortile caratterizzato da reperti archeologici di antiche età trovati in zona e ora fissati alle mura. La torre, in laterizio e con inglobati elementi di statue e fregi, mostra anche un orologio solare con quadrante di ferro di forma circolare, in cui sono inserite 10 linee senza cifre. Questo cortile, in cui è collocata anche una struttura ottocentesca che ospita un ambiente destinato a battistero e oratorio, è anche decorato da marmi e altro materiale proveniente dalla ristrutturazione della Basilica di San Paolo fuori le mura. Tutto su ordine del papa Pio IX, come si legge su una incisione nella porta di ingresso, il quale nel 1856 volle un ammodernamento della chiesa, almeno in questa parte esterna. Il risultato? Rispetto all'edificio più antico è tutta un'altra architettura e piace questa commistione di stili, per valorizzare il momento della preghiera.
