Amazing views from Monte de Toro

After going up Monte de Toro you can see the hermitage that’s up there, but the best thing is the amazing views of Menorca’s coastline.

From the top, you can see La Illa dels Porros, Puerto de Sanitja, the lighthouse of Cavallería, the Tirant beach, and the village of Fornells.

The lord of antennas!

I was at Monte Toro in Menorca enjoying the views of Menorca and I thought that the antenna statue was pretty funny.

A legendary mountain

El Toro, the highest mountain with 359 meters of altitude, is a must in Menorca and a place to find excellent views of the northern coast, specifically the Fornells bay.

If the day is clear, it’s possible to see the Tramontana mountains in neighboring Mallorca and some pretty stunning sunsets.

The name “de Toro” comes from “al-Thor” which means “the peak” in Arabic, but it’s also related to a local legend. The legend says that years ago a bull (“toro,” in Spanish) lived up on the mountain, protecting the peak and barring any of the villagers from climbing to the top.

But one day, a group of nuns went up and instead of chasing them off, the bull led them to a grotto where they were blinded by a white light and they saw the Virgin Mary dressed in black. They went back down to the village and built a temple, but the miracle only happened on the peak of the mountains, that’s why they built the hermitage there.
