Architecture of an "Italian theater"

Built in 1880 under the patronage of some local bourgeoisie. Teatro Calderon amply responded to the fill the need for performances and festivities for this class, such performances were on the rise in the last third of the nineteenth century (thanks to benefits generated by the revitalization of sugar cane agriculture). The theater's architecture is that of an "Italian theater" given its Neoclassical decoration. Outside, it was a city landmark, but was given a distinctly private civil building in the square that perfectly integrated with the surrounding historic buildings. The austere exterior contrasts with the ornate interior, which is shell-shaped, with decorative elements of great interest and a beautiful wooden ceiling with oil paintings of the muses of art.

Restored in 1999, it is now used for numerous cultural events.
