Among artisans and artichokes
Monreale is well known for its cathedral and cloister, but maybe not so much for its streets and village life within walking distance of this magnificent tourist attraction. I had a lot of time so I decided to take a walk catch a bus back to Palermo, and wouldn't want to go if walking around the Duomo. I was lucky that this was a market day in the street, the fruit seller was attending to his perennial artichokes with a cigarette in mouth, townspeople greeted each other with great fanfare and crossed the street asking about their families. There were recesses of small tunnels with baroque facades and photo worthy.
Come on, that is priceless and well worth a stroll. On the streets closest to the Duomo there was a small shop selling souvenirs and handicrafts to tourists groups, they probably go there in all seasons (or someone leads them around). There are small workshops where they make all kinds of things in mosaic. It seems they are emulating the mosaics in the central nave of the Duomo, but they are not gold-plated, heh, heh. But it's worth taking a look at these-surely-ancestors of cardboard puzzles, and the patience and work required. The trouble is that they made things that I do not really like. ; D
