The Royal Force Castle
Cuba's oldest fortress, which was begun in 1558, was built at the entrance channel of the bay of Havana (too far into the channel of the bay of Havana, to meet the objective of deterring and protecting the city from attack by pirates). On its tower stood a weathervane called The Giraldilla, which now is the symbol of the city. After the triumph of the Revolution, the upper floor of the Castillo contained the National Monuments Commission and then to the National Center for Conservation, Restoration and Museology, while on the ground floor is now located the Museum of Weapons. Located on Calle O'Reilly No 2, it is visible from the Malecon, open every day from 9:00 to 19:00 (except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays).
