The Sacred Cenotes
These are the natural wonders of the Mayan world. On the Yucatan peninsula, there are some of these amazing natural formations. They are called cenotes. Sometimes they are in caves and at other times exposed on the surface,natural "pools" whose water comes from the rain or underground channels. A cenote is an underground river, or a flooded cavity, the resulting from the accumulation of groundwater, and of this water filtering through the limestone that covers it. The Yucatan Peninsula is one of the largest limestone platforms in the world, together with those of Cuba and Florida. It has been estimated that in the Yucatan Peninsula there are at least 3000 cenotes, of which only 1000 are known and explored.
