Almudena
A lively area
This is one of the main buildings in Charleston, and one of the oldest markets in the country. In 1788, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney gave the land for the purpose of building a market. At first, it sold meat, vegetables and fish, with marble slabs used to keep the fresh produce from going off. After numerous disasters ... fires, tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, and bombings ... it has been renovated since the 1970's, and today you can buy crafts like handmade baskets, herbs, soaps, etc. The old brick still remains, and it's a lively, bustling area.
