The last of its kind
This four-masted ship, a sailboat used for commercial voyages around Cape Horn, is one of the last of its kind. Made in Germany and launched in 1911, it was used for nitrate and wheat trade through the dangerous sea routes of Cape Horn. It has a steel hull and four masts, weighs 3,100 tons and measures 115 meters long and 14 meters wide. There are 4,100 m2 of sail area. When it was docked in Chile during World War I, it was sent to Italy as war booty. Italy then resold it to its original owners in 1923. In 1932, it was acquired by the British shipping company and renamed Arethusa Shaftesbury II.
