10 reviews of Palais de l'Isle

Great charm

The Island Palace is probably the most photographed monument in the center of Annecy. This is a 12th century palace on a small island in the middle of the river. It was later used as a prison and now houses a center devoted to the study of the city's architectural heritage. Presumably, being completely surrounded by the river, is it was difficult for the prisoners to break out. Its figurehead is very recognisable and gives a great charm to this area of the city.

The Old Prison of Annecy

The Island Palace (Palais de l'Isle in French), or the old prison dates back to the 12th century and is now the Interpretation Centre Annecy Architecture. This tiny town in France (which is situated very close to the city of Geneva, Switzerland) is charming. The channel Thiou and colorful old houses are now called the "Venice of the Alps". Walking through the medieval streets is an experience. But this building, which was once the prison, is the characteristic symbol of Annecy. The flowers placed on bridges and hanging from the balconies give a special feeling to the landscape, which is already beautiful in itself.
