Menorca’s easternmost town
Only 5km from Mahón, you have Es Castell, an enchanting maritime town dotted with traces from the British rule in the 18th century. The town dates its founding back to the construction of the imposing Castle of Sant Felip at the entrance of the port, a strategic point during the era of invasions.
Es Castell is the easternmost town in Menorca, a fact which makes it the island’s best location to watch an amazing sunrise. The town has straight streets and a square flanked by old British barracks, an interesting Military Museum, and a unique architecture of whitewashed houses and sash windows.
The historic district of Es Castell is really beautiful, although it’s not nearly as beautiful as the streets which lead towards the sea. Narrow and winding, they all descend towards Cales Fonts, the old picturesque fishing port.
Talking a walk through there is a real pleasure. It’s dotted with colorful fishing boats and the bay is surrounded by restaurants and cafés serving the freshest seafood. In summer, the dock is covered in terraces and the place has an excellent atmosphere.
