The Konso Tribe

El territorio Konso se encuentra al Sur del lago Chamo y cuando te acercas a uno de sus poblados sientes que has dejado atrás la Etiopía ancestral y “salvaje” para regresar, por decirlo de alguna manera a la “civilización”, y os puedo asegurar que este choque se me hizo especialmente duro, de repente sentí una nostalgia terrible de todo lo que había dejado atrás, después de tantas jornadas compartiendo experiencias vitales con gentes que visten con pieles, pintan sus cuerpos simplemente para estar bellos, se laceran la piel en ritos ancestrales, veneran a sus ancianos, adoran a sus pequeños , disfrutan bebiendo la cerveza que ellos mismos elaboran (muy rica y fuerte por cierto aunque poco aconsejable para escrupulosos) , te abren “la puerta” de sus chozas y disfrutan narrándote su vida , llegas a un poblado en el cual, si, las chozas están mucho más elaboradas llegando en ocasiones a utilizar como material de construcción la piedra , algo que no había visto desde que abandonamos Arbaminch, las gentes que lo habitan visten ropas occidentales, si, pero echa jirones y tremendamente sucia, practican la agricultura en terrazas , si , pero se palpa el hambre y la miseria , algo que no había percibido desde hacía muchas jornadas… Quizá en el fondo lo que ocurría es que me resistía a abandonar la Etiopía “auténtica”, “ancestral” y “salvaje” que tanto me había fascinado y me dolía sobremanera reencontrarme con los primeros atisbos de una civilización mal llevada, preludio por otra aparte de lo que había de ser el final de mi periplo por estas tierras del Sur. Sería injusto no destacar lo ingeniosos que llegan a ser los pobladores de estas tierras al aprovechar las pendientes del terreno para cultivar hasta el último palmo de tierra fértil; según he podio constatar, posiblemente se trate de los primeros africanos que practicaron este tipo de agricultura. No quisiera despedirme de los Konso sin hablaros detenidamente de las Waga, pero eso es otra historia que merece un capítulo aparte.

Maybe in the end what happened is that I was reluctant to leave Ethiopia "authentic" , "ancient" and "wild" that both fascinated me and hurt me greatly reconnect with the first signs of a civilization mismanaged, prelude for another addition to what was to be the end of my journey through this land of the South. It would be unfair not to highlight the ingenious who become residents of this land to take to cultivate land slopes down to the last inch of fertile land, as I have been able to note, it is possibly the first Africans who practiced this type of agriculture.
