Elegant building
Hammersmith Bridge is an elegant building that crosses the Thames in the west of the city between the neighborhoods of Hammersmith and Barnes. It is a suspension bridge painted in a very peculiar bottle green. The bridge is not very long or wide (210 m long and 13 m wide) and is in fact the second bridge raised at this point of the river on the foundations of old which had to be closed, has to stay small while respecting the heavy traffic that crosses it. The current bridge dates from 1887 and was designed by Joseph Bazalgette, a famous British civil engineer, who amongst other wonders of Victorian-engineering, built the London sewerage system.
Today it is open to both pedestrians and vehicular traffic, but has suffered prolonged closures because the amount of traffic damaged the structure, and it suffered from corrosion problems and even Real IRA attacks. For fans of rowing, the bridge is on the route of the annual race between Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and many viewers use it to see the race. And speaking of views, the appearance of the bridge when illuminated at night is amazing, and I would recommend that if you come in the summer to London have an aperitif in the pubs on the edge of Hammersmith and enjoy the scenery.
