FEPP volunteering
Fepp, a popular Ecuadorian group that encourages progress, is an important organization with an annual budget of just $ 15 million! You'll see a lot of FEPP projects in many areas. I'm going to Lago Agrio in the Amazon, to see the projects that were started and to attend a women against violence meeting. We'll start by visiting a new birth clinic, funded by FEPP. You can have a consultation for $ 1, give birth for $30, and come for an ultrasound for $7. Rates are very low for a quality service. There is also a thrift shop for baby clothes, and a discount pharmacy. All decisions for change and investment were suggested by FEPP, but it's always the women who manage the place.
Most are voluntary, many Spaniards, and if you want to volunteer out there, they are always looking for more people. Communication with Amazonian communities is mostly via radio. Every morning there's a Quichua radio broadcast at 5am, the group leaders who are furthest away listen daily. They may well be on their way to attend meetings in Lago Agrio, sometimes three days' journey from his home!
