The Estor

This part of Lake Izabal is less known to travelers, simply because there are hardly any buses or other vehicles to get you there. You have to rent a car or do auto stop, and it is not a place as spectacular as the other side and the tributaries Rio Dulce. But when I went, I enjoyed it. First, after an hour's drive, there are caves that you can visit. There, you cave or kayak or go to the river to Lake Izabal. Then we went to the Liberty farm, a farm that has hot springs, and a place for swimming. On the shore, there are several restaurants without too many people, near Morales and the bridge of Rio Dulce, where they prepare dishes and roasted river fish.

I recommend that you try the delicious ceviche, which is raw fish marinated in lemon pepper and tomato. It is a Guatemalan specialty that is very delicious and much appreciated. The people that stop to pick you up expect that you will give them some money in return, because it is their job. It is worth it though because you wait less compared to the bus, and you're more comfortable in a pickup as the road is not paved. There are a couple of buses a day, and The Curtain has hotels on the shore of the lake that are nice.
