The Eight Arches Bridge (Ribeira Grande)

En la localidad norteña de Ribeira Grande encontramos el Puente de los Ocho Arcos o Ponte dos Oito Arcos en su lengua original. Ubicado en una de las calles principales llamada Rua do Estrela fué construido entre 1888 y 1893. La primera visión que tuvimos de este puente la tuvimos desde las inmediaciones del paseo marítimo, justo en la desembocadura del río que atraviesa la ciudad y que viene desde la imponente [poi=658671]Lagoa do Fogo[/poi] pasando por lugares impresionantes como [poi=648931]Caldeira Velha[/poi]. Siguiendo un pequeño sendero se puede obtener una buena visión del puente desde abajo con la ciudad al fondo y el parque municipal. Merece la pena verlo desde esta posición. Este puente construido con piedra volcánica no tiene una anchura relevante. Por él circulan vehículos con un solo carril para un único sentido. Tiene una acera muy estrecha pero aún así se puede pasear por él y disfrutar de las vistas al mar y al centro histórico de Ribeira Grande. Desde el puente se puede observar la ciudad con el campanario de la iglesia al fondo y la cámara municipal. Justo al lado del parque discurre el río con pequeñas cascadas artificiales. Cuando se construyo el Puente de los Ocho Arcos se le consideró como la obra mas importante de ingeniería de la época. Lo cierto es que este puente le da un valor paisajístico añadido a Ribeira Grande y la ciudad perdería mucho encanto sin él ya que es un espacio abierto que, sin duda, se agradece.

In the northern town of Ribeira Grande find Eight Bridge or Ponte dos Arcos Arcos Oito in their original language. Located in one of the main streets called Rua do Estrela was built between 1888 and 1893. The first sight of this bridge we had had it from nearby promenade, right at the mouth of the river that flows through the city and coming from the stunning Lagoa do Fogo through stunning locations as Caldeira Velha. Following a small path you can get a good view of the bridge from below with the city in the background and the municipal park. Must be seen from this position. It has a very narrow sidewalk but still can walk through it and enjoy the sea and the historic center of Ribeira Grande. From the bridge you can see the city with the steeple of the church in the background and the city council. Right next to the park flows the river with small artificial waterfalls. When they built the Bridge of Eight Arches was regarded as the most important work of engineering of the time. The truth is that this bridge gives added aesthetic value to Ribeira Grande and the city would lose a lot of charm without it because it is an open space that will undoubtedly appreciate.
