Donkeys with Breeches
Why are the donkeys on the island of Ré wearing pants? Well, this interesting little fact dates back to the time when donkeys were used for all kinds of farm work, as well as being a means of transportation. In these marshy areas there were a lot of mosquitoes and the locals had to protect their animals from getting bitten by making them wear pants with suspenders. Prints and stripes were the fashion at the time. Over time, the donkeys started disappearing. That is, until a breeder on Ré Island, Mr. Léau, made every effort to save the breed. Since then, between April and early November, donkeys become another attraction of the island.
