The Coldharbour Gate
The sections of the wall, which formed part of the west side of the original wall, was built between 1221 and 1238. It was during the reign of Henry III and replaced the defenses previously built by William the Conqueror. The slope at the base of the wall was part of a moat, which is believed to date from the 11th century. The foundations of Coldharbour Gate and the wall ruins are the only structures of the massive fortifications of the late 1230s that survived. It was later used as a prison but it was not escape proof. A woman named Alice Tankerville, who was accused of piracy, escaped in 1533
