1 review of The Citadel of the Oléron Castle

Fortress from the 17th Century

This 17th century fortress still has the remains of the citadel that was built by Richelieu within its interior. In 1666, with the construction of the port of Rochefort, Louis XIV wanted to build a defensive belt to protect the mouth of the river. From there came the idea of fortifying Forras and the island d'Aix. The result can still be seen today. The citadel was remodelled and strengthened over time to make it impassable by the enemy. It's one of the biggest attractions on this small island. During the Revolution, many secular and religious people were detained here. The attention to order and design are particularly striking, and are the rule throughout most of the town.

Everything is organized around a large plaza within which there is a beautiful Renaissance fountain with four columns. The harbour, with its daily bustle, enters almost to the middle of town. The boats come and go to the oyster beds. Normalcy and sameness is the general trend on the island of Oleron.
