Well preserved
Located at the highest point of the city with impressive dimensions, this beautiful and fully preserved military citadel withstands the test of time. Devised by the ubiquitous Vauban in 1679, it's now part of the World Heritage along with 10 other fortifications built by France's most prestigious military engineer. To access the interior, you have to hire a guide from the tourist office, always within arranged hours since public access is now prohibited because it belongs to the French Navy and is only accessible with permission. It seems a little out of place in such a small town like Mont-Louis,
But history reminds us that its construction was due to the need to defend the border with Spain where turf battles were continuous, though there were never any attacks on Mont-Louis and the city is well preserved.
