The Angel of the North
At the entrance to Gateshead, near Newcastle, in the North-East of England, the stunning wings of the Angel of the North indicate your arrival into the area. The Angel of the North is a steel sculpture of colossal dimensions (twenty meters high and fifty-four meters wide), it can be found along the A1 motorway connecting the North and South of the country. Designed by Antony Gormley, its construction began in 1994 and was finished 4 years later. The Angel of the North was part of the Celtic legend of the area in which the angel protected the area from enemy attacks. In a way, the construction of this contemporary sculpture has brought back the old legend, so that the existing and next generation are all aware of it.
