The temple of protection
Walking the streets around Kamimaezu, we found a small temple filled with paper lanterns, some red and the others white, with black writing. The temple is well-hidden. It was built near the Nagoya Castle in 1540, and moved to its current location in 1610. It was destroyed during the Second World War, but was later rebuilt. It is an important temple for the city, as it is believed to have protective powers. Many Japanese come here to pray during the day, but the main attraction for non-religious tourists are the architectural details, and the paper lanterns.
