Good Spanish food in Puerto Calero
The sleepy resort town of Puerto Calero is mainly known for it's beautiful seaside path, discrete yet opulent 5-star hotels, and generally relaxing way of life. Despite the romanticism of it all, it's still a tourist town which means that finding good Spanish seafood among the pubs and sandwich joints can be a bit tricky. No fear: the Taberna del Puerto is right in the port and serves reasonably-priced and reasonably-authentic Spanish coastal fare.
The highlight is their menu of paellas, ranging from traditional mainland paellas made with snails and rabbit, to the Alicantine speciality "fideua," a kind of paella made with short noodles instead of rice. We opted for the fideua with cuttlefish, shrimp, and monkfish and it was delicious. We washed it down with a local bottle of Malvasia white wine made on the island which was crisp and tasty and perfect in the mild sea breeze. All in all, our meal cost around 30 euros all included, not bad considering we left with full bellies and a bit tipsy to boot.
I can say that this is definately the best restaurant on the Puerto Calero seawalk!
